I am confused regarding the reaction of the British media to Brown's comments. I think that Gillian Duffy does indeed look like an adorable grandmother. However, her comment about where all the Easter Europeans immigrants were "flocking" from, is if not outright bigoted, at least not so sweet and adorable at all. Duffy is certainly entitled to have a point of view with regards to the issue of immigration, and to quiz a public official like Gordon Brown about his own point of view, after all that is demo...... more

Dear spicyflo, I don’t think that religion is “designed” to keep the human mind in bondage, slavery, and discourage it from expanding. However, I think that you are absolutely right to assert that those are the consequences of religion (unintended consequences might I add). I think that religion served a purpose in the course of human development and history, perhaps to cope and adapt to a mostly unknown world, and to make sense of it. However, religion is no longer serving that purpose. We can now rely ...... more

Dear OrcOnTheEndOfMyFork you made an excellent point, indeed “You don't need religion to infringe human freedom. Just look up the Soviet Union sometime.” However, if we understand religion as an institutionalized (or personal) system of beliefs, practices, values, and attitudes that somebody lives by, then in the case of the Soviet Union, one could argue that religion consists of the Soviet Government and State itself. On the other hand, religion is not the only pretext to infringe human freedom (a claim...... more

Dear voldo2006, you caught me!! My comment about Will Phillips is exactly the same as the one that you quoted from “http://www.buzzfeed.com/josemiguelmaximoo/religion-is-the-pretext-for-every-infringement-of-559r-vi0". However, in response to your comment “Lol, Can't even come up with your own post” technically speaking I did come up with my own post since I am the author of both. Yes, jose miguel maximo (my id at buzzfeed), and jmaximo (my id at comedy central) are one and the same, me. I apologize if t...... more

Religion is the pretext for every infringement of human freedom: it is the argument of tyrants; it is the origin for injustice, bigotry and prejudice based on sexual orientation. When I do good, I feel good. When I do something bad, I feel bad. That's my religion. What does being an American mean? It means to enjoy liberty and justice (the essence of freedom). Will Phillips said “I really don't feel that there's currently liberty and justice for all” and refused to stand for the pledge of allegiance. For...... more

I can’t avoid to wonder what is more important; to have a healthcare system for everybody, to have a robust economy, to wage a war against our enemies or to have a place that meets the requirements that humans need in order to live. Reason and logic seem to indicate that the answer is quite obvious. We could have the perfect health system (whatever that may be), we could have the strongest economy in the world, and we could prevail over our enemies, and all this would mean nothing if the earth’s climate ...... more

With regards to faith, religion (mormons in this case), and the Bible, it is interesting to see how the church can be a safe and loving place for all individuals (including homosexuals). On the other hand, it is interesting to know the reasons that led people to believe that homosexuality is not only a problem, but a sin and see what influences foster these beliefs. There is a clear correlation between these beliefs and the church (of any denomination) being an unsafe and inhospitable place (not only for...... more
